UW-La Crosse is famous for its physical education and sports science programs, and those departments will get new teaching space under a plan approved Wednesday by the Wisconsin State Building Commission.

During a meeting in West Allis, Wis., the commission approved $6,037,500 (pages 62-65) to construct three specialized sports labs at Mitchell Hall.

A locker room there will be turned into an athletic training area. The wrestling room will be remodeled as an exercise and sport science lab.  The project also includes improvements to the Human Performance Lab.

Several walls will be removed inside the 60-year-old building to create more space for the labs.

A new fieldhouse for UW-L sports is now being built across the street from Mitchell Hall.

La Crosse state Assembly Rep. Jill Billings serves on the commission. She said the project will increase local jobs and help the region’s economy.
