COVID cases in La Crosse County hit highest total since January

Published

on

La Crosse County has been rated as having a “high” COVID-19 transmission rate by the state, in part because of the fast-spreading Delta variant.

COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in the county are rising.

La Crosse had 70 cases over a two-day span this week, including 38 on Monday — the most cases in a day since the end of January.

As can be seen above, most of the cases are among the unvaccinated, but breakthrough cases among the vaccinated are being reported.

La Crosse County residents fully vaccinated hit 56.1% Thursday. Statewide, the total is 49.9%. Two neighboring counties have yet to get to 40% fully vaccinated — Jackson (39.5%) and Monroe (39.0%). While Vernon County is at 45.2% and Trempealeau is at 53.2%.

With the “high” transmission rate, masking is recommended for everyone aged 2 and over, including those who are vaccinated.

“We are asking the public to be aware of this concerning increase in COVID-19 cases and take the necessary steps to protect themselves,” La Crosse County Health Department director Audra Martine said. “The most important step is to get vaccinated, the next is to wear a mask when in a public place.”

The vaccine is free and readily available at multiple places throughout the area.

The La Crosse County Health Department provides free vaccines every week at standing clinics and can provide home-based vaccination for individuals, who are unable to leave their residence.
