Contests galore, as Houston County Fair kicks off Wednesday
Big concerts, food, 4-H, a demo derby, and a whole lot more happening in Caledonia, MN this week.
With a motto like “Where Town and Country Meet,” a fair has to live up to that phrase. The Houston County Fair plans to do just that again this year.

When: Aug. 18-21 (full schedule)
WHERE: 203 South History Lane, Caledonia, Minn.
Fair Manager, Emily Johnson, told Classic Hits 94.7 there’s something for everyone.
“We have everything from open class 4-H, entertainment for kids, major concerts in the grandstand and demo derbying,” Johnson said.
The grandstand schedule is indeed a big lineup:
- Thursday: Wayland Concert, 7 p.m.
- Friday: Neal McCoy Concert, 7 p.m.
- Saturday: Demolition Derby, 6 p.m.
- Sunday: Tuff Trucks, 1 p.m.
There are also an incredible amount of contests all week, including:
WEDNESDAY
4-H planter contest — 6 p.m.
Talent contest — 6:30 p.m.
Queen coronation — after talent
THURSDAY
ADA dairy bake-off — 2 p.m.
Chocolate brownie contest — 6 p.m.
FRIDAY
Favorite Mac & Cheese contest — 5:30 p.m.
SATURDAY
Diaper derby — 10 a.m.
Lego contest — 11 a.m.
Apple pie contest — 4 p.m.
SUNDAY
Euchre tourney — 11 a.m.
SUNDAY ABILITY DAY
Main dish contest — 11 a.m.
Dessert contest — 11:30 a.m.
Yard Yahtzee — noon
There is also, of course, plenty to eat and drink at the fair, too.
Johnson promised many of the favorites:
- Stumpy’s
- Smoke and Chrome
- Oly’s Mini Donuts
- The Udder Place
- The 4-H Food Stand.
The Midwest Rides Carnival will run Thursday-Sunday.

With the help of community members and businesses, they’ve also added a new livestock building — the Schulze Livestock Building. A ribbon cutting ceremony for that is at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
