UW-L students up for $7,000 scholarships, after school hit 70% vaccinated — $100 also available

At least seven $7,000 scholarships for University of Wisconsin-La Crosse students is up for grabs.

UW-L was the first school in the UW System to to announce it hit a 70% vaccination rate as part of a scholarship campaign.

UW System’s “70 for 70” aims to get 70 students scholarships — which total $490,000 — when schools hit the 70% vaccination mark.

Students who get vaccinated now will have a chance for one of at least seven scholarships. More could be on the way if other schools don’t hit the 70% mark.

Students, and all community members, will also receive $100 from the state if vaccinated before Sept. 6. Students are also eligible for other incentives (click here for more info).

UW System president Tommy Thompson was at UW-L on Wednesday to make the announcement about the school being the first to hit that goal, though UW-Madison announced Thursday that 90% of its campus is vaccinated — and it was at 88% on Wednesday.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported: “UW-La Crosse’s data is based on a student survey and pending confirmation by the campus student health center, which is obtaining permission from students to cross-check vaccination status with the Wisconsin Immunization Registry. Spokesman Kyle Farris said in the meantime the university trusts its students for having provided complete and accurate information.”

Students and community members can get vaccinated at the Cartwright Center at UW-L (map here) from 12-4 p.m. through Sept. 10. No appointment needed. Vaccinations are free.
