A nonprofit in Coon Valley aimed primarily to help youth, adult and military veterans with disabilities is hosting Saturday an open house of sorts — an open farm.

Since a pandemic hit, HorseSense has seen a great need from La Crosse and surrounding counties for its services — services that are entirely community funded.

Saturday’s drive-thru fundraiser from 10 a.m.-noon will show off its 40-acre farm at the top of 10-Mile Hill in Coon Valley (map), will include therapy horses stationed along the drive, where guests are encouraged to chat them up.

“Our program has grown quite a bit, especially in response to COVID,” Executive Director Samantha Hall told Z93. “So we feel really blessed that we’re still around and kick in unable to help our community during this time.”

That’s where the community comes in, as HorseSense relies wholly on donations from people and organizations that see the value in therapeutic horseback riding. It’s fundraisers like these that are so important, because they’re unable to do them in a traditional manner.

Along the drive-thru tour, there will also be BINGO and other fun activities available for children to play as they navigate throughout the property. A 50-50 cash raffle will also take place.

Music is made possible by Fall Harvest Festival media sponsor Mid-West Family — La Crosse will be playing throughout the event.

Guests are encouraged to bring cash with them to purchase raffle tickets and cupcakes at the event. Custom-made cupcakes will be available to buy for $3 each or two for $5.

HorseSense wearables will also be on site for purchase.

Cash raffle tickets are available for $10 each. The 50-50 cash raffle drawing will take place following the event at 12:30 p.m. at HorseSense, but participants can tune in live on their Facebook page instead to watch the drawing online — you do not have to be present to win.

If you’re not able to attend the event, but still able to donate, you can do so at their website.
