Doyle doubts Nugent will have much influence on sandhill crane hunt proposal
Almost 20 years ago, hunters in Wisconsin persuaded state leaders to allow a hunting season for mourning doves. Now, there’s a new bird in their sights…and a campaign to let state residents hunt sandhill cranes.
La Crosse area lawmaker Steve Doyle is surprised by some arguments he’s hearing for a crane season.
Doyle noted that rock star Ted Nugent was in Madison this week, supporting the hunting of cranes by saying things such as “sandhill cranes are like ribeyes in the sky.” Doyle characterized the rally which featured Nugent as a “sideshow.”
“This is one where I don’t think that we’ll be out shooting sandhill cranes next year, but I’ve been proven wrong before,” he said.
Doyle doesn’t think Nugent has enough “credibility” to persuade legislators on the hunting bill, or on a bill to make it easier to carry concealed firearms.
The crane hunt is supported by farm groups such as the Wisconsin Corn Growers Association.
