Davenport police: Officer shot man who refused to lower gun pointed to own head

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A man who was shot by a Davenport police officer during a confrontation has died, according to the Iowa Department of Public Safety.

Bobby Klum, 37, was walking on a Davenport street while pointing a gun to his head on Wednesday afternoon, the Department of Public Safety said. He refused officers’ order to lower his gun, the agency said.

After officers fired two less-lethal rounds at Klum “to no effect,” an officer shot him, authorities said.

Klum was later pronounced dead at Genesis East Hospital.

Klum had a lengthy criminal record and was on parole for a sex offender registration conviction from 2017, The Quad-City Times reported.

Since 2013, Klum had served time for third-degree burglary, second-degree theft, conspiracy to commit a felony, and violation of Iowa’s sex offender registration statutes. He had been convicted at least four times for aggravated misdemeanor charges of driving while barred.

The officer who shot Klum was placed on administrative leave, per department policy anytime there is a police shooting.
