Study of local police being suggested to La Crosse County committee
La Crosse County could take a step closer this week to forming a committee to study policing in the area.
A resolution to authorize a study comes before the criminal justice management council on Wednesday. County supervisor Steve Doyle has been working with community members to get ideas for a study.
“County Board chair Monica Kruse will get to appoint (the committee),” says Doyle, “but we have done some checking within the community, and we certainly have a number of law enforcement officials that we need to have involved. That’s important.”
Doyle says the full county board could authorize a police study at its November meetings.
Since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last year, many communities have decided to study how their police operate.
Doyle says the people he’s been talking with are a “work group, to create a committee to create a committee.” He says the county isn’t at the point where a permanent committee, similar to the justice management council, is formed.
