“Salting smart” recommended on La Crosse pavement this winter

The city of La Crosse would like you to cut back on salt — on your sidewalk and driveway.

The city’s Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department is promoting a “salting smart” campaign this winter, aimed at reducing how much salt goes on the roads and, eventually, into the rivers or wastewater systems.

The campaign organizers say a 12-ounce coffee mug will hold all the salt you need to cover 10 sidewalk squares or a 20-foot driveway.

They also suggest clearing snow off the pavement before it can turn to ice and using sand, instead of salt, when the temperature drops below 15 degrees.
