As I See It
Democrats say do as I say not as I do
Governor Evers has vetoed maps drawn by the Republican legislature. The result will be maps drawn by a court, but don’t expect big changes. The maps drawn by the legislature are well drawn and avoid the huge mistakes made by Evers’ People’s Maps Commission.
The vote in the state assembly was 77-21 against Evers’ maps, including 21 no votes from Democrats. The greatest failure was splitting minority voting districts in violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Milwaukee Democrat Rep. Sylvia Ortiz – Velez received a standing ovation when she pointed out that Evers’ maps dramatically reduced the number of districts with black and Hispanic majorities.
Recently La Crosse County Democrats drew new maps for county board. Board chair Monica Kruse has a new district that is two islands connected by a strip of land where nobody lives.
The Democratic Party continues its pattern of do as I say not as I do.
