As I See It
Help celebrate Giving Tuesday
In recent days we have taken note of Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday. Another holiday is on today’s calendar. Today is Giving Tuesday, a day to help out charities in our area. Many charitable organizations are struggling to meet demand, and increasingly relying on the philanthropy of donors to carry out their mission. It doesn’t have to be much. Maybe an extra dollar or two in the red kettle. I will be dropping off a couple packs of new socks to the La Crosse Warming Center. Or it could be a larger donation to your favorite charity to earn a tax deduction. There are plenty of needy and deserving charities in our area that are doing good works to help those less fortunate. But if you have questions or just want to make sure your money is going to the right place, the state’s Department of Consumer Protection is a good resource, offering lists of charitable organizations registered by the state. They warn not to send money in response to a phone or email solicitation without first ensuring they are who they say they are and that you’re not getting scammed. Of course starting local is usually best, perhaps knowing someone on their board or a volunteer. We know the need is great, and we know they appreciate all donations, especially on Giving Tuesday.
