Gasoline prices in La Crosse often have a tendency to rise to a certain level and then stay there for weeks at a time. There has been a drop in pricing this past week.

The Wisconsin AAA confirmed that pump prices in La Crosse are now down to $3.03 a gallon — under that at two locations near the Valley View Mall.

A week ago, the typical price around town was $3.17 per gallon — the same price as in early November. The statewide average is $3.04, compared to the national average of $3.35, which is down 7 cents in the past month.

AAA says fears of a resurgence of COVID-19 are driving some of the prices downward.

The local price drop means Milwaukee now has the highest gas price among large cities in the state — 1 cent above La Crosse at $3.04.

Gas is now under $3 a gallon in Green Bay, Eau Claire and Janesville.

In early December of 2020, gas was still between $1.78-$1.98 a gallon in Wisconsin’s major markets.
