La Crosse’s 1st 2022 baby: Aspyn Gerriets

Gundersen Health System gets the honor of having La Crosse’s first hospital birth of 2022, about a half-hour after the start of the new year.

That baby is a girl named Aspyn Gerriets. She was an early arrival, delivered through an emergency C-section, weighing 4 pounds, 8 ounces.

Mayo Clinic Health System’s first baby of the year in La Crosse was born at 6 p.m. — a boy named Asher Yang,. He, too, was born ahead of schedule, weighing 6 pounds, 7 ounces.

Gundersen reported 1,776 births at its area hospitals for the year just ended — 80 more than the year before, for an increase of 4 percent.

Mayo has not released an exact number of the babies born at its area hospitals during 2021.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area.
