Mayo looking at potential six-story expansion in La Crosse

Mayo Clinic Health System is looking to expand in La Crosse.

A possible six-story “hospital bed tower” expansion is on the La Crosse city council agenda for 9 a.m. Friday. It includes 12, multi-page PDFs.

Mayo’s plans aren’t yet approved by leadership, according to a statement. But, it wants to get the ball rolling with the city on zoning reviews and initiating construction, should the plan get the go ahead.

It looks as though the “La Crosse Campus Renewal” would consume the block from Jackson to Division street, between 10th Street and West Avenue, and then some.

According to one file on the agenda, construction could start March 1.

In a letter to City Planner Tim Acklin, the architect on the project wrote that Mayo has “aging facilities,” listing a number of buildings, and that the plan looks to replace, over time, two older buildings with a multi-phased redevelopment program.

Mayo Regional Vice President Paul Mueller said in a statement, “If approved, the modernized hospital building would be a significant addition to the La Crosse community and the Washburn neighborhood and is one component of a larger revitalization plan for the La Crosse campus that will include updated facilities, more green space and greater connectivity to our neighbors.”
