Northern Iowa will get a big tourism event this summer.

The Des Moines Register has chosen a route in the northern part of the state for the 49th annual RAGBRAI bicycle ride.

The week-long trip from July 23-30 will begin at Sergeant Bluff, on the Missouri River, and conclude on the Mississippi River in Lansing, Iowa, with overnight stops including Mason City and West Union.

Lansing was also the final destination in 2017, when the riders stayed overnight in Cresco and Waukon.

The RAGBRAI traditionally runs west to east from the Missouri River to the Mississippi River.

The first ride took place in 1973. There was no RAGBRAI in 2020 because of COVID-19.
