As I See It
Wisconsin lawmakers should remember they’re on the same team
This is how divisive politics have become in Wisconsin. Governor Tony Evers has proposed issuing $150 checks to every taxpayer as a way to spend nearly $4 billion in state surplus. The plan was immediately criticized by his Republican opponents, as is just about everything else he proposes. But in this case, Evers is being criticized by people who seemingly want the same thing. Several Republican lawmakers fired off news releases criticizing Evers’ plan to issue tax rebate checks. They say they are the party of tax cuts, and Evers is trying to take credit for their ideas. So they no longer like the idea. Apparently if Republicans and Democrats want the same thing, then it can no longer be a good idea and must be opposed. Imagine if that happened on the Green Bay Packers. You don’t hear Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams arguing after a touchdown whether it was the pass or the catch that made the difference. It doesn’t matter who gets the credit. They are just happy to get a touchdown, because they are on the same team. Our legislators may be from different parties, but they are on the same team. The team we elected to represent us in Madison. And as long as they score a touchdown, it shouldn’t matter who gets the credit.
