MUSCATINE, Iowa — The Muscatine Humane Society is caring for 42 dogs that were rescued from a mobile home, where they were living in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, police said.

Police received an anonymous tip last week that a couple was living with the dogs in a mobile home, causing health issues for some of the animals, police said in a news release.

The mobile home from which they were rescued had an “excessive amount” of animal waste and a lack of adequate food and medical care for the animals, the statement said.

The Humane Society is still waiting to get custody of the dogs, which ranged from newborn to 15 years old.

“In the meantime we are meeting the needs of the pups in each and every way,” the Humane Society posted, where you can also donate. “It brings us to tears when we look at how far they have come in a weeks time.”

It said the 42 dogs came scared and confused about what’s happening but now recognize staff and crave their attention.

The next steps, it said, are as follows:

  • Phase 1: Vaccines, de-worming and flea treatment , and they have been examined by our veterinarian. Many fecal samples have been read and de- worming protocols have begun.
  • Phase 2: Heartworm testing, spay/neuter surgeries.
  • Phase 3: dental cleanings. Dental cleanings go above what most dogs need so that will be a challenge monetarily for us.

No charges have been filed.
