Central student set to be tried in La Crosse for pipe bomb charge

A Central High School student pleaded not guilty Thursday to a charge of possessing an improvised explosive.

Montgomery Jacobs of Coon Valley was charged last month with allegedly trying to build a pipe bomb at home. A trial will be scheduled in the case.

Police were called to the Jacobs’ home after a metal pipe and a bag of powder were found inside the 18-year-old’s bedroom.

Jacobs claimed he had taken items home from school with the intent to weld some metal.

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
