Fiery crash in Sparta leaves woman dead, man in hospital

Investigators are looking into a weekend accident in Sparta, Wis.. where a car caught on fire, killing one person and injuring another.

Mary Slonka of rural Sparta died at the scene, after the Sunday morning crash. The other person in the car, Timothy Slonka, is listed in critical condition at Gundersen.

The two, who are both 67 years old, were removed from the car before it was engulfed in flames.

The crash occurred at Highway 16 and Aspen Boulevard, near the Sparta Walmart.

The car reportedly knocked out a fire hydrant on the street, as well.

Three people have now died in Monroe County crashes since the start of 2022.
