Weekend severe weather sets odd record from National Weather Service — La Crosse office

Published

A thunderstorm in the area over the weekend, caused the National Weather Service — La Crosse to issue a severe weather warning.

That warning on March 5 for a severe thunderstorm/tornado was the first of 2022 and the fourth-earliest warning in a calendar year.

It also set a sort of odd record, the National Weather Service posted. Back on Dec. 15, 2021, there was also a severe weather warning — the latest of the year.

So, between that date and last Saturday was 80 days, which is the shortest number of days between a last warning of the previous year and a first warning the next.

It beat the record by one day. Severe weather warnings were issued Oct. 18, 2007 and Jan. 7, 2008 — 81 days apart.

These records date back to 1986.
