Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse is moving ahead with its plans for a new, smaller hospital.

The city’s Board of Public Works meets Monday to consider a request to close part of Mississippi Street, to the west of West Avenue, to help development of what’s being called the Mayo Bed Tower.

The project cost is estimated at around $200 million.

The proposal calls for partial street and sidewalk closure beginning April 11. Construction of the project could last until August of 2024.

Mayo announced last month that it will build a 70-bed hospital to replace the existing medical center which has been known in the past as St. Francis and Franciscan Skemp.

It will be smaller than the current hospital.
