Renters getting a break on parking, on some La Crosse streets

For those who own a house on a La Crosse street with a two-hour parking limit, they can get a permit from City Hall to park on the street without getting a fine.

The rule, however, is different for people renting on such a street. Renters have to pay a $50 yearly fee for a permit.

City council president Barb Janssen said Monday during the city’s Board of Public Works weekly meeting that’s not fair, and it causes problems in college neighborhoods.

“It’s aggravating problems in our neighborhoods,” Janssen told the board. “College students, in particular, in my neighborhood, choose not to pay that fee and basically, now we’ve just turned our entire neighborhood into two-hour parking.”

Mayor Mitch Reynolds wants the city to look into the permit policy.

For now, the board of public works is abolishing that parking fee for renters.
