Traffic calming and landscaping in plans for west end of King Street in La Crosse
More street changes are in the works for downtown La Crosse.
The board of public works has reviewed design plans for what’s being called the King Street Greenway.
The city planning office says the work planned west of 7th Street toward the river would be similar to improvements made on the east end of King. There would be new trees planted, and some bump-outs built into the street, a “traffic calming” measure.
Also, speed bumps may be installed at locations near the bus station the Pump House, and Piggy’s restaurant, all on King Street.
La Crosse’s fire department has worries about planned speed bumps, which could severely slow down fire trucks in an emergency.
Assistant fire chief Steve Cash spoke to the board of public works on Monday.
“I’ve got some concerns relating to that,” Cash said, “due to that slowing our response times going down King Street there, same way that a speed bump would slow us down in our response times.”
