United We Chalk is a family-friendly, all-abilities chalk art competition taking place this Saturday to raise money for Great Rivers United Way’s 51 funded programs.

This year’s event is presented by artPOP. The community is invited to come to win or watch the action in the Harborview Plaza parking lot, on the southwest corner of 2nd and State, from 8 a.m. til 2 p.m.

Great Rivers United Way’s executive director, Mary Kay Wolf, said there will be art enthusiasts of all ages at this weekend’s event. The cost to enter as an individual or team is $40.

Wolf said this year’s campaign theme is “Play it Forward.” While it’s not necessary for artists to follow the theme, there is a prize for the “Best Use of Theme.”

United We Chalk will also feature a family fun zone and lunch options from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Apothik, Sugar Coated, and Rosie’s Cafe are confirmed vendors on the event’s website.

The other main way that funds will be raised is through People’s Choice voting. Votes can be made for your favorite with a one dollar donation to GRUW, either in person at the event or online HERE.

Event T-shirts, featuring a design donated by local artist Tiffany Lavendar, are available for purchase online and at the event, while supplies last, for $10 each. Last year’s shirts will also be available for $5.

The people’s choice winners will be announced at 4 p.m. Tuesday, through the Great Rivers United Way’s Facebook page.

Wolf also added that in the case of rain, artists will be given supplies to do their own chalk design within a few weeks and submit photos of their art. The online voting will still take place to continue to raise funds for Great Rivers United Way.
