The lock and dam near Genoa, Wis. — 15 miles south of La Crosse — will be closing soon on four separate days to fix its 85-year-old gates.

On June 14, 16, 21 and 23, the dam will close for 12 hours beginning at 7 a.m. to all river traffic — commercial and recreational.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – St. Paul District will replace the lock chamber’s miter gates during those times.

When the lock reopens after each closure, there will be a priority based on vessel type — government vessels, followed in order by excursion, commercial navigation and recreation boats.

Once the lock reopens, lock staff will communicate specific locking instructions via marine band VHF radio channel 14.

The miter gates are original, dating back to the 1930s. Over time, they’ve damaged and distressed, which has led to serviceability issues, a release from the Army Corps said.
