Gov. Evers visits Good Fight center for youth in La Crosse

Some young people stopping at a La Crosse community center on Monday were surprised when they got to meet Wisconsin’s governor, taking a tour.

Gov. Tony Evers spoke with kids and staff at the Good Fight Community Center in downtown La Crosse.

The governor says nontraditional education opportunities should get state support, along with regular schools.

He talked of “how important it is that … not all learning happens in schools. Actually, there’s other places in kids’ lives, such as this, where they grow and learn and become better prepared for a future.”

Evers was given a tour of the Good Fight by founder Nathaniel Coleman, who says the center’s mission is to help young people do their “absolute best.”

“Our summer program, Perfect 10, is gonna be ending on Friday,” Coleman said. “It’s our third year doing it, helping kids to manage through the tough times … and get the education that they need.”

The Good Fight features a boxing ring and training room, along with other activities for youth.

Evers says it’s possible that the state could provide more funding for community facilities such as the Good Fight.
