La Crosse’s alternate-side parking could become emergency-only
One of La Crosse’s most unpopular winter traditions could get a major change this year.
A city council committee has given the OK to an amendment limiting alternate-side parking in the winter only to periods when a snow emergency is declared, and just for 48 hours at a time. The existing rule calls for odd-even winter parking every night for up to four months, starting as early as Nov. 15.
City council president Barb Janssen thanked two council members who have worked on the proposed changes.
“Our residents will be able to park on the streets when it’s not snowing on both sides,” Janssen said. “It’s a win-win.”
Recently, the city changed the winter parking system so it would not take effect until after the first two-inch snowfall on or after Nov. 15. In 2021, that didn’t happen until the second week of December.
La Crosse police are skeptical of the idea, though. Police Chief Shawn Kudron on Tuesday told the council Judiciary and Administrative Committee that Eau Claire tried a similar change, but then went back to its old winter parking plan.
The parking amendment goes to the full city council next week.

We are again taking an age old law that Generations are use to dealing with, that every other town, and City has enacted, and now changing it because a few don’t care for it. It’s a simple law. But I guess simplicity, and common sense is out the window now days.
