Lawsuit threatened against city of La Crosse in fight over conversion therapy

Supporters of conversion therapy in La Crosse have enlisted a statewide group to help their cause.

City council members have received a letter from the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty (WILL). The legal firm has called on city leaders to give up on a proposed ban of conversion therapy or else face a lawsuit.

The council voted in June to outlaw therapy reportedly aimed at trying to change a person’s sexual preference, if they identify as gay or transgender.

Members later decided to delay enacting the ban, but the measure is back on the council agenda in September.

The letter from WILL, based in Milwaukee, calls the ban a “speech suppression ordinance,” and says it’s unconstitutional.

Citizens have criticized the council for reportedly passing the ban without much public discussion before the vote, though it did go through public committee meetings.

A rally was held outside City Hall in June, aimed at persuading Mayor Mitch Reynolds to veto the measure. That, however, came a day late, as Reynolds had already signed it.

“A rally was held outside City Hall in June, aimed at persuading Mayor Mitch Reynolds to veto the measure. That, however, came a day late, as Reynolds had already signed it.”

NOT TRUE! According to the City Clerk, Ordinances passed by the council AUTOMATICALLY go into effect 24 hours after publication (2nd Saturday after passage) irrelevant of the mayor’s signature. His signing the Ordinance DID NOT cause it to go into effect any sooner. He had until 5pm on the Tuesday after the council voted to veto the Ordinance no matter his signature on the Ordinance a day earlier or not.

In addition, please stop framing this as a sexuality/gender issue. It’s NOT. This is 100% about the council attempting to adopt an Ordinance that is unconstitutional – PERIOD.

This issue is totally about maintaining our God-given rights as outlined in the United States Constitution.

I’m a gay man and I do not support what this group is doing BUT, the constitution protects this group I may not like it but I will stand with them to protect thier First amendment rights. This city can not adopt an ordinance that blocks the First Amendment
