A man from Jackson County, who killed his father nearly a decade ago, will get another court hearing on his request for release from the Mendota Institute.

A judge did not rule this week on the petition filed by 29-year-old Lars Helgeson. The hearing will be continued at a later date.

Investigators said Helgeson shot and killed his father Brian Helgeson in the fall of 2013, then buried him on the family’s farm near Hixton, Wis.

Brian Helgeson’s body was discovered days after he was reported missing.

Lars Helgeson was committed to Mendota in 2017, when he pleaded guilty of murder but was found not guilty by reason of mental disease. The prosecution plans to call more witnesses to testify about Helgeson’s case.

Lars Helgeson was 20 at the time of the shooting.

Judge Mark Goodman of Monroe County plans to schedule another hearing to take testimony from more witnesses.
