La Crosse County election update with clerk Dankmeyer

Voters wait in line in the Town of Onalaska on Nov. 2, 2022.

La Crosse County clerk Ginny Dankmeyer on WIZM’s La Crosse Talk PM at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday for a quick elections update. WIZM will have election results throughout the night online and on air.

La Crosse Talk PM airs weekdays at 5:07 p.m. Listen on the WIZM app, online here, or on 92.3 FM / 1410 AM / 106.7 FM (north of Onalaska). Find all the podcasts here or subscribe to La Crosse Talk PM wherever you get your podcasts.

“The lines are steady or they’re busy, which means we’re going to have a good turnout,” Dankmeyer said. “We haven’t had any problems. The voters seem upbeat, so that is definitely good with how contentious some of the things are going right now.”

Dankmeyer expects results to be in around 9 p.m. for smaller municipalities and after 10 p.m. for the bigger ones.

“It’s going to be a late night,” she said. “A lot of the polling places, because they have been busy all day, haven’t had time to process their absentees, so that likely won’t happen until after the polls closed.”

As for turnout, she said it’s been good but not so different from four years ago.

“It’s been heavy all over,” Dankmeyer said. ” Even the smaller municipalities have had steady lines. It’s great all over the county.

“Four years ago, we’re probably on track to be somewhere near that. I think we had about an 85 percent turnout of registered voters in 2018 and I wouldn’t be shocked if we’re close to that same percent turnout.”

In terms of new voters, Dankmeyer alluded to some newcomers but, again, perhaps not that atypical.

“I haven’t talked to all the polling places, but I know the UW-L campus one said they had over 700 registered voters, which isn’t unheard of for a campus,” she said. “Some the polling places said they’ve had a steady line of registering voters all day.”
