November is budget season for local governments; city and county of La Crosse talk money on Monday
It’s budget time for both La Crosse County and the City of La Crosse. The county board and the city council both have budget sessions Monday night, to work out spending plans for 2023.
County board goes first at 5 p.m. Its budget calls for just over $200 million in spending, with a projected 12 per cent cut in the county’s debt. A final budget vote may not happen until next week.
At 6 o’clock on Monday, the La Crosse city council discusses $69 million in proposed spending for next year. The city meeting could be continued until Tuesday night, if no final vote happens tonight.
The city’s general fund budget is down about $200,000 from last year’s level. Fire and police employees could get a raise next year, of one per cent for the fire department, and a two-step increase for police which would add up to three per cent.
