Time to clean up Wisconsin Supreme Court

It is time to clean up the Wisconsin Supreme Court. As we prepare for another Supreme Court election, I can’t help but think of how things used to be on the state’s high court. Better. They used to be somewhat sleepy elections for a seat on the court, but now big money is thrown into trying to get the favorite of the rich and powerful elected to the court so they can scratch the back of the rich and powerful who put them there. Even though the race technically is non-partisan, and there is no “D” or “R” next to the candidate’s names on the ballot, getting elected to the Supreme Court has become very political. Millions is spent on advertising trying to paint the other candidate in a negative light in a bid for party control. It wasn’t always this way. We should keep the big money out of Wisconsin’s Supreme court race. And we should require judges on the court to recuse themselves when they hear cases involving donors who contributed to their campaign. Instead, it is left to the individual judge’s discretion whether they should hear the case, and lately they’ve shown a lot of indiscretion. Public perception of our courts is at an all-time low, and it is no wonder why. We need to clean things up so we can truly have justice for all.
