Quite a few people have gotten a notice from the city of La Crosse to shovel their sidewalk this winter.

City Hall said Monday there has been 118 citations through Feb. 24 to property owners who didn’t clean snow off the sidewalk within 24 hours after snowfall ended.

The city has received over 200 complaints this winter about unshoveled walks.

A slight majority — 53 percent — of those who received citations, did clean up the walks themselves. In the other cases, a contractor was sent out to shovel, and the owner was sent an invoice for that work.

Many homeowners appeal their citations on Mondays to the Board of Public Works with explanations about why their walk wasn’t shoveled.
