As I See It
A positive experience with City Hall
They say the wheels of government turn slowly, and often they do. But not always, as I learned firsthand. The water pipes in my home had begun to make a noise. They were even vibrating. The sound was very much like that of rushing water. I debated calling City Hall, but ended up calling a plumber, figuring City Hall was likely to tell me to hire a plumber anyway. The plumber came and after some quizzical looks, suggested there was probably a leak in the water main outside my home. But he wanted to call the Water Department to see if they could come over and confirm that. The guy was there in five minutes, and told me just minutes after that he found the problem, that it was the city’s problem, and that they would be over first thing this morning to fix it. And they said they will be able to finish the job later today. Within another half hour, more city employees were at my house to post no-parking signs so they can do their work. And turns out those I spoke with are listeners, and wanted to talk radio. This was going even better than I could have hoped, and it was refreshing to see such a quick response to a taxpayer’s problem. I don’t know how much leaning on shovels will be done while the repairs are underway, but so far I am rather impressed with the city’s use of my tax dollars.
