South Avenue in La Crosse will be closed overnight on Thursday and Friday due to the roundabout project being handled by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

The road will be closed beginning at 9 p.m. and won’t reopen until 5 a.m..

Drivers should use Jackson Street and Losey Boulevard to get around the closures. La Crosse MTU will utilize the detour shown below during this project.

The DOT is continuing its work to install three roundabouts on that stretch of road and crews those two nights will do utility work that includes:

  • Clearing of existing grubbing piles
  • Concrete removals
  • Storm sewer work
  • Sidewalk removals
  • Installing temporary water lines

The entire project isn’t expected to be done until fall.

Back in November of 2021, the DOT said construction for the three roundabouts would cost an estimated $11 million.

The two roundabouts that were completed just south of the Highway 35-US 14/61 intersection cost around $8.8 million.
