County funding sought for All-Abilities Park planned in Holmen

Holmen could get its own all-abilities park soon.

A plan to develop such a park in the Remington Hills addition is being considered by the La Crosse County executive committee.

It would be similar to the Trane All-Abilities Park in La Crosse, which features playground equipment that can be used by physically challenged people.

Members of the county committee said they support the plan, but have put off a vote to use $50,000 from the county’s general fund for the park, because it hasn’t been through the regular budget review process.

The North American Squirrel Association (n.a.s.a.) is requesting the grant money.

County board chair Monica Kruse said that committee members are not opposed to helping create the park, but they oppose the timing of the money request outside of the regular budget deliberations.

Special funding would have to pass the full county board on a two-thirds vote.

Trane All-Abilities Park opened in June of 2021. Groundbreaking took place in 2018. It cost around $6 million.
