As I See It

Just weird weather, or climate change?

You know what the say about weather in Wisconsin. Just wait five minutes and it will change. That has certainly been true over the past week in La Crosse. We have seemingly had all four seasons in just a matter of days. We got our first 90 degree day of the year last week, smashing a record that had stood for decades. We have seen red-flag warnings, wildfires, rising water that has prompted flooding concerns, and now a mid-April blizzard that threatens to dump a foot of snow in some places. I started the week thinking of planting flowers, and now I’m looking for my snow shovel again. What’s going on with this wacky weather? We’ve seen April snow before, and we’ve certainly seen flooding, and it has gotten to 90 in April before, but rarely so early in the month. Is this climate change happening before our eyes? None of us can say for certain. But we do seem to be getting more extreme weather more often. What used to be unusual or even rare is becoming more common. Is that the sign of a changing climate? If the definition of climate change is a changing climate, then it sure looks like it to me. Now, where did I put my shovel?

You’re just now understanding that the climate changes? FYI: it’s been changing since the beginning of time and it will continue to change.
