UPDATE: River dropping throughout La Crosse area, but may stay above flood stage all week
The flooding isn’t over yet in western Wisconsin, but the water isn’t going up any more.
The Mississippi River crested Friday at several towns south of La Crosse. The river level has gone down as much as a foot since that time.
According to the National Weather Service – La Crosse, the river may still be above flood stage in La Crosse a week from now, but it will probably be just a few inches over the 12-foot flood mark.
As of Sunday night, the water had fallen to 14.5 feet on the La Crosse riverfront, falling a foot since Friday morning. It could be down to 13 feet by this coming Friday, which would be just one foot above flood stage.
In many places, this is the third-highest Mississippi flood on record, behind 1965 and 2001.
