Suggestions for Lincoln Middle School building still being offered by public

La Crosse school officials and an architectural firm continue to accept ideas for reusing a middle school that’s about to be shut down. The school district had two comment sessions on Tuesday about uses for Lincoln Middle School.

Jack Zabrowski with the ISG company outlined what would be discussed during an on-line meeting.

“What aspects of Lincoln Middle School are important to keep in the neighborhood?” said Zabrowski. “What does the neighborhood need today, that this development could serve? And what are the key qualities of a new development that will insure success far into the future?”

Housing is one of the more popular options for the 100-year-old school. Lincoln might also be kept open as a neighborhood center, with the public able to use the gym and the theater.

A small number of citizens also went to the Hogan building on Tuesday afternoon to discuss ideas for using Lincoln. The school district decided earlier this year to reduce the number of middle schools from three down to two, after a referendum for a new high school was defeated.

I have a suggestion; let’s use the Lincoln property as a middle school to relieve the overcrowding now expected at Longfellow Middle School. This plan would avoid spending $millions on Longfellow to address said overcrowding.
