La Crescent’s Applefest celebrating 75th Anniversary
One of our region’s longest-running community festivals is preparing for a major milestone with reunions and an ongoing weekly trivia contest.
What started in 1949 as a way to celebrate the city’s apple industry has grown into quite the celebration in La Crescent, Minnesota. Applefest takes place annually, the third weekend in September; this year’s dates are September 15-17, 2023.
As part of this year’s special 75th-anniversary celebration, Applefest Alumni (past members of the Board of Directors) are holding a trivia contest to share fun facts about Apple Festival and the community’s apple industry, and to engage the public in preparations for this year’s extra-special La Crescent Apple Festival.
Applefest Alumni Core member, Leanne Poellinger, said some of the questions “are a little tricky, but if people do some sleuthing online, or ask some people in the know, they should be able to find the answers.”
Right before Applefest, prizes will be awarded to trivia participants. “We have local businesses that have donated gift cards and money and products,” said Poellinger. There are over $500 worth of prizes.

The festival is also looking to get together anyone that has a history with Applefest. “If they served on the board, or were part of a royalty, or a man and woman of the year, Poellinger explained, “we’re planning some special reunion gatherings for some of the people that have been closely associated.”
This year’s King Apple Parade, Sunday September 17, will feature an alumni float, that will have some images of past buttons over the years.
They encourage past Applefest associates interested in getting involved to reach our to their Facebook page or contact through their website.
