As I See It

Should UW System close campuses?

I’m not a fan of threats as a way to try to get what you want. Yet we have seen that from the Milwaukee Brewers, as they suggest they may pull out of Wisconsin if lawmakers don’t approve some $300 million to pay for renovations to Miller Park. It just isn’t a good look for a team owned by billionaires. We are also seeing threats from the head of the University of Wisconsin System, who has warned lawmakers and chancellors that if the state doesn’t approve the funding it requested, everything would be on the table, including the closing of campuses. Governor Evers has proposed spending about $300 million to fund the system, but lawmakers have balked at that request. Some have gone further. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos wants to trim $32 million of that, eliminating funding for university diversity and inclusion efforts. That seems petty. But so do the comments from UW System President Jay Rothman that tuition will rise, programs will be cut, and some campuses could be closed if they don’t get the money. Maybe that is true. Maybe things are so dire they can’t make ends meet without that $32 million. But maybe this is a good time to examine the entire system, and evaluate the need for 13 four-year schools and 13 two-year programs. Maybe eliminating some of those campuses would be the answer to their funding woes.

Republican law makers in Wisconsin have lost what is left of their small, insignificant minds. They have no solution to any problem people making under $500k face in today’s society.

Instead of funding one of the pillars of Wisconsin’s Society; the life blood of our Society, EDUCATION; They, would rather choke off the access of higher education to our young adults, depriving them of an economic future and dumbing down those who would attend our great University System. Forcing our young brain trust of adults to choose Universities outside of the Great State of Wisconsin. HOW DUMB!!!

    SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!

I have blasted the Wisconsin Republican party for being immoral on the subject of not doing everything possible to end the misery of the residents of French Island. We hear a lot about inclusion and diversity but they are mere words. Anytime a conservative is scheduled to speak at a college there is an outcry and usually that person is not allowed to speak. Many conservatives on college campuses both educators and students are ostracized for their views.
This Republican stance is probably out of frustration since true diversity and inclusiveness is never practiced. So why should taxpayer dollars be spent on these programs? The university’s answer is a threat.
Every one should remember that taxpayer dollars fund these institutions and we deserve that money be spent wisely. I agree that the whole system should be analyzed and if needed changes made. Businesses do it all the time; examining their operation from top to bottom and making changes including closing locations when needed. Why should not a university system do the same.
