A week after several people were hurt in a La Crosse drive-by shooting, the city’s police chief wants to assure citizens that the drive-by was a rare incident.

“This does not happen all the time,” Chief Shawn Kudron told WIZM’s La Crosse Talk PM, “but, you know, this kind of case can happen in the city of La Crosse.”

Kudron added that police responded quickly to the 3rd Street shooting around bar time June 17, and were able to find the weapon and a suspect in a short time.

The use of police dogs and a drone helped lead to recovery of the gun from the roof of a business, according to Kudron. Investigators say the gun used in the drive-by shooting was found a few minutes later on the roof of Dee’s Muffler Shop, a few blocks north of the crime scene.

DeAndrew Grant is now facing 27 criminal charges resulting from that incident, including six counts of attempted murder.

“The way this type of incident unfolded lends itself to the tragic consequences of so many people being injured,” Kudron said.

Seven people were hit by gunfire, while an eighth person was hurt by broken glass from shattered windows and doors.

“This is something that again, we certainly are not gonna tolerate in the city of La Crosse,” Kudron added. “Gun crime is not something that should be tolerated.”

Grant remains in the county jail on a $1 million cash bond. He has a brief status hearing in court on June 21.
