Frequent flooding has often forced western Wisconsin area families to move out of homes located near rivers.

Because of that natural hazard, a Home Buyout Project has been developed by Monroe County.

Thursday, Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers promoted flood control efforts at a site along the La Crosse River, that’s now called Brinkman’s Landing.

That land had been the home of Al Brinkman, who took part in a buyout program after the river flooded his house two years in a row.

His property was redeveloped into open space. The Wisconsin state budget, recently signed by Evers, contains $4 million for local flood control grants.

Monroe County had applied for the federal funding to help owners of houses damaged by flooding in 2017 and 2018.
