Prairie du Chien is getting ready to bring its police and fire departments together under one roof.

U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin went to Prairie on Monday to check out the current stations and the future building site.

Baldwin, who’s running for re-election, said that $5 million in federal funding will be put toward the cost for the Public Safety Center, though that total was not known.

The city is planning a Public Safety Center to be built near Prairie du Chien High School, on the former site of a hospital. The city is seeking an architect for the project but no date has been set for a groundbreaking.

Right now, the police department is located north of downtown, while the fire station is about a mile away.
