City of La Crosse may use existing ARPA funds to maintain services to homeless

The city of La Crosse is looking at ways to continue funding outreach services to people who are homeless.

The funding for a team of outreach workers employed by the Independent Living Resources agency runs out at the end of this year. Thursday’s agenda for the city finance committee includes a resolution calling for $155,000 in federal ARPA money to be used to keep the outreach program going. About $22 million in ARPA funds were distributed to the immediate La Crosse area, because of the pandemic.

Money for the outreach team would come from funds which were approved last year to buy a south La Crosse motel for bridge housing. The plan to purchase the Maple Grove Motel was later withdrawn.
