As I See It

Confidence in election officials key if we’re going to be confident in election outcome

What a mess they’ve made in Madison. A fight is happening over the administering of Wisconsin’s elections, and it has gotten ugly. It has to do with Wisconsin’s top elections official, Meghan Wolfe, is the administrator of the Wisconsin Elections Commission. Her job is non-partisan and the committee she heads is comprised of an equal number of Democrats and Republicans. But still Wolfe has come under fire from critics, who accuse her of refuting Donald Trump’s claims that he won Wisconsin, and is accused by some of even rigging the election in the favor of Joe Biden. That is despite the fact after numerous reviews determined the election was administered fairly and the results were accurate. Here is where it gets messy. Wolfe’s term is due to expire, but the Election Commission held no vote on reappointing her to a new term. Even though there is no appointment to consider, the Wisconsin Senate wants to hold confirmation hearings anyway in hopes of forcing Wolfe out. This is not a good look, and doesn’t bode well for future elections, especially since the 2024 election is likely to be very close again. We need to be assured someone is in charge of our elections or surely there will be more fighting about the outcome.
