Challenge to 2022 election for sheriff dismissed in La Crosse County court
A La Crosse County election from last fall has now been settled at last, in court.
Judge Elliott Levine has dismissed a legal challenge of a recount for county sheriff, following a motion hearing held in August. Voter Mary Jo Werner had filed suit challenging how the recount was conducted, but the judge said Werner did not have legal standing to file the suit.
The challenge also questioned whether college students who don’t live full-time in La Crosse County should be allowed to vote on local races.
John Siegel won the sheriff’s election over Fritz Leinfelder by 176 votes, and only one vote was changed as a result of the recount, which was conducted more than a week after the November election.
