Closing La Crosse schools? Your voice matters

Published

on

Here we go again? Once again the La Crosse school district is considering ways to save money by closing schools. The last time the district proposed closing schools, there was an outcry. Many didn’t like the idea of closing Logan High School and combining students at a Trane Company building on the far southside of town. They accused the district of trying to ram the unpopular plan down their throats. It is not clear what the latest plan will look like, or how it will be received, but there have been discussions about closing the district’s newest high school, Northwoods Elementary. Other possible closures include Southern Bluffs or Emerson. Before long, the district will formalize its decisions. That is why if you are concerned about the future of La Crosse Schools, now is the time to pay attention. Board agendas are easily available online. You can watch a live stream of the proceedings, or even go back and watch it later. You can attend board meetings in person and share your opinions directly to the board. There is still time to get involved in the future of La Crosse schools. No decisions have been made yet. But they will soon. If you want to have a voice on whether schools should close, now is the time.

I was at the meeting last night.

Here is an update from the FAC meeting:

The FAC will recommend that one “north”
and one “south” school will close. This means that either North Woods or Emerson will close and that either Spence or Hintgen will close at the end of this year. There was an anonymous vote made of the 19 committee members. 14 voted to close North Woods and 5 voted for Emerson. 10 voted to close Hintgen and 9 voted for Spence.

Nothing is set in stone. The FAC still has another meeting on November 2nd. They are still working on coming up with their recommendations to the school board.

As long as the school board sits on its collective rear end and allows, no enables, the superintendent to misrepresent matters there is not much that can be done short of a recall. The very last act of the former school board (just before the April election) was to extend the superintendent’s employment contract for two more years. The current school board seems less intellectually curious about what the District is doing than the prior school board, if that is even possible.

The reality is and will continue to be declining population throughout the country. Closing schools is occurring and will continue to happen.
    Others mentioned wasting money.
Cities like LaCrosse cannot afford long term to keep schools open that have and will continue to have student population decline.
You want to keep schools open that need to close?
How much more in taxes do you want to pay?

The BS excuse of “population decline ” is not true and needs to stop being regurgitated by npcs that blindly trust the school board. In 1990 LaX had 51k people, average age 29.6

    2020 LaX had 52 6k people, average age 29.4

No schools need to close. This is just retaliation for the superintendent now getting his referendum and being able to advance his career and move to a bigger city, like he did before us.
