As I See It
Brewers poised to pocket our money
Why are Wisconsin’s politicians so eager to bail out billionaires? The Wisconsin Assembly has passed a Brewers bailout bill that would send hundreds of millions of dollars of our money to fix up American Family Field. The state would spend $546 million to the team in exchange for a promise to stay in Milwaukee through 2050. This isn’t a done deal, but the bill heads to the Senate next and already seems to have the approval of Governor Tony Evers. It is like they can’t spend our money fast enough. Keep in mind all this money is more than it cost to build the entire stadium, and despite the fact that the team is worth more than a billion and a half dollars, and its principal owner is nearly a billionaire. Yet both political parties are more than happy to throw our money their way. It seems this money could be better spent. That state surplus is still just sitting there. How about a tax rebate? How about more money for cities like La Crosse which will have to close a library and perhaps a pool to balance the budget. Something is wrong when our lawmakers spend just months agreeing to help the Brewers, but have spent two years trying to figure out how best to help the average citizens of the state.

I am not a baseball fan but I don’t like the way this editorial is written. The Brewers are not the sole owners of the stadium , its majority owners are the county govts surrounding Milwaukee. How much economic impact will the deal have to the surrounding areas through its almost 30 year term? Tell the whole story not just the part that backs up your opinion.

There is plenty of money…the City and County just spend $50 million in covid cash without a dime for the taxpayer.
Its all about choices. The City and County wanted to fund its pet projects; the county board chairman said as much. For taxpayers…too bad, so sad.

The Republicans in the legislature didn’t want to assist day care providers, and said they should survive financially according to the free market system. They wouldn’t even spend federal money to expand Medicaid. Yet, those same Republicans are willing to spend over $500 million to financially assist a team that is part of a legal monopoly that results in players being paid millions of dollars and the owners making hundreds of millions. Republicans only want state financial assistance for the wealthy, and let the “free market” dispose of those people in need of assistance.
