La Crosse County takes its turn figuring out speed limit on County B
The plan to lower the speed limit on a busy La Crosse highway could get more discussion from the county board next month.
La Crosse’s city council approved reducing the speed limit on County B from 35 to 25 miles an hour where it passes North Woods International School.
At last night’s County Board meeting, however, members chose to delay a final decision.
Supervisor Ralph Geary thinks there’s been enough study and debate already over two years, and said it’s time to vote.
“Next month, the criteria isn’t going to change, the results aren’t going to change,” Geary told the board. “What’s going to be different next month?”
Board chair Monica Kruse said the area near North Woods already has an even lower speed of 15 miles an hour.
“But there would still be this residential area that, it’s felt, needs to have slower traffic,” Kruse said, “and that’s why that 25 mile an hour speed limit, I think, is being proposed.”
A final vote on Thursday failed, because it did not pass by a two-thirds margin.
